Hi, I’m Laura
I received my first started from a friend in 2019, became obsessed and left my corporate job to learn how to make the best sourdough bread around.
I studied Civil Engineering in my hometown at San Diego State University. Realizing I didn’t want to start working in an office straight out of college, I left the country and traipsed around Europe for a few years then got a Masters degree in Environmental Science from Kingston University in London. Eventually I had to come home and worked for an engineering consultant firm water quality for a few years. The most satisfying work I did as an engineer was working with my hands onsite at treatment facilities, groundwater sampling, fixing and troubleshooting elements in the treatment system.
After having practiced yoga for 10 years and experiencing a life changing event, I became a 200-hr certified yoga instructor in 2017 and began teaching at local studios after my day at the office. It was through the yoga community in Orange County that I met my life partner, Alan.
We moved to Yucca Valley, CA in 2019 and it was thanks to Alan’s encouragement and totally unorthodox ethos for living that I quit my job in 2021 and immersed myself fully in the world of sourdough. My ever curious mind has lead me to taking bread baking work shops with the California Wheat Commission and reading all the books (over and over) listed on my References page, plus countless hours of experimentation in my home kitchen. I continue to expand my knowledge of all things sourdough and humbly share what I know with anyone interested in becoming “bread autonomous”. The constant pursuit of knowledge has been my secret to happiness.
